Advertising intends to promote the sales of a product or service and also to inform the masses about its features. It is an effective means of communicating the value of a product or service with people at large. Advertising utilizes different media to reach out to the masses. It uses different types of appeals to connect to consumers spread across the globe. The various types of advertising appeals use different ways to highlight product features and draw attention of the masses.

  • WHO the ad is aimed at - describe them demographically and psychographically
  • WHAT is being advertising and WHAT is specifically highlighted about the product (the benefits) in this ad?
  • WHY this helps sell a product
  • WHERE/WHEN this ad might appear in order to reach its target audience

Five Appeals That Advertisers Use to Sell a Product

Appeals speak to an individual’s need, wants or interest. The most common advertising appeals include use of fear, humor, rational, sex or bandwagon propaganda.

Fear

Fear appeals focus on the negative outcomes that can happen because of an action or inaction. Advertisers use fear appeals to promote an immediate behavior change such as eating healthier or not smoking.

Humor

Humor appeals make consumers laugh and create an emotional link with the product. A well-executed humor appeal enhances recollection, evaluation and the intent to purchase the product.

Rational

Rational or logical appeals focus on the consumer’s need for practicality and functionality in a product. Advertisers relay this message by focusing on product features and cost. These ads tell consumers the benefits associated with the purchase of a product. The advertiser then provides proof to back up the claims.

Sex

Sex appeals capture attention, but seldom promote product consumption. Effective sex appeal ads convey a specific message to the target demographic group. Beer advertisers often use sex appeal to promote their product to men. The typical scene involves several young, average-looking men in a bar.

Bandwagon

A bandwagon appeal makes consumers believe they are missing out by addressing the consumer’s need to belong. Food and drink ads show hip young adults enjoying a product and ignoring the individual who chooses the less popular product. Medical products show consensus by indicating the number of medical professionals who support the product.

Read ‘A Testimony’ and then plan and write 300 words

1.      You are A H in the chapter ‘A Testimony’.  Write a diary entry about your experience.

Dear Diary,

When the soldiers first knocked at my door and I was asked for my papers. I thought it was just a controlled visit. I don’t remember anything wrong with them. However, they took me to a building by the front line. The feelings of not knowing were, why and for what I was there were terrifying. They told to take me off all my cloth and run across the street while they shoot me if I wanted to continue with life, . I will never ever understand what was this about; I was panic. The fear didn’t let me think about anything else rather than trying to keep with life for my wife.
Although weeks had passed since the incident, I continued having nightmares about the endless street that almost took my life. Running away from these soldiers was not the hardest part. After an anonymous person dressed me like a child, because I couldn’t feel my legs, I crossed into the other side of the town. Either way I looked at the city, which was destroyed and the people were hungry and full of fear and sadness, this broke my hurt, and I realized I was in the same situation.
I never stopped thinking about her, not even for a moment. Despite all the horror of the situation, I never doubted that I was going to escape and meet with my wife in Croatia again. I was sure I had to get out of the city, if not I would have gone crazy. Other people achieved to get away, why not me?
I never lost hope of being safe with her. After days of thinking and planning the way out, the day of my escape arrived. I was aware it was not going to be easy and if they caught me, I would be shot. With all my strength I crawl, run, and jump dead bodies. Something else was left to do and I will be able to meet her. When the soldiers opened the door and saw me, my hurt stopped beating. However, when they let us go I felt I was born again.
Finally, I saw the thing I was waiting for what has seems like decades, I felt relief, glad and most of it delight.

RATIONAL

I wrote a dairy entry about the feelings of the H character when he was caught by a group of soldiers and he had to plan a way to meet again with his wife. It was written with a tone of fear and hopes to address to any reader who wills to understand the situation of the people during the war.
In my diary entry I tried to use emotive language with phrases like “I was panic”, “my hurt stop beating”, “I never stopped thinking about her”. I tried as well to use strong and moving adjectives such as “terrifying”, “endless”, “fear”. Using these elements i feel i reached my purpose of reflecting about the character feelings during these difficult situation.

I choose to write a diary entry because I felt that in this way I could reach to hock the reader by writing the character feelings in a personal way.

Kate Russell's weekly review of the best apps and websites.
The internet is a powerhouse of great educational tools that make learning fun and free for all. Busuu is a social learning platform that teaches 12 languages using colourful buttons, clicks and drag and drop interactivity to learn vocabulary, dialogue and writing.
There are lots of initiatives to encourage youngsters to learn coding right now, and the internet is the perfect forum for this. Code.org is a great starting point, serving up practical lessons you can complete in your bedroom that give you real results really quickly.
The Year of Code is a project running this year that has high hopes to nurture the programmers of the future. The site has great support, advice and loads of other resources where you can pick up computer skills free of charge.
Teachers or parents who want to have a hand in their child's education can build their own quizzes with GetKahoot. Using it, is as simple as dragging and dropping the elements, such as images, video and text, into the creation tool.
If you are still hungry for education resources this blog by a teaching professional has compiled over 190 free teaching and learning activities.
On 30 March Digital Unite's Spring Online digital inclusion campaign begins, which helps thousands of older and less confident computer users take their first steps with digital technology.
Some children (and adults) would rather play video games than study, but perhaps that is not as bad as you think. This week's video comes from ASAPScience and investigates whether playing video games can make you smarter.

Scientists 'print' new eye cells

Many teams are researching different ways to repair the sight-giving cells of the retina

Scientists say they have been able to successfully print new eye cells that could be used to treat sight loss.
The proof-of-principle work in the journal Biofabrication was carried out using animal cells.
The Cambridge University team says it paves the way for grow-your-own therapies for people with damage to the light-sensitive layer of tissue at back of the eye - the retina.
More tests are needed before human trials can begin.

This is a step in the right direction as the retina is often affected in many of the common eye conditions, causing loss of central vision which stops people watching TV and seeing the faces of loved ones”
Clara Eaglen of the RNIB
At the moment the results are preliminary and show that an inkjet printer can be used to print two types of cells from the retina of adult rats―ganglion cells and glial cells.
These are the cells that transmit information from the eye to certain parts of the brain, and provide support and protection for neurons.
The printed cells remained healthy and retained their ability to survive and grow in culture.
Retinal repair
Co-authors of the study Prof Keith Martin and Dr Barbara Lorber, from the John van Geest Centre for Brain Repair at the University of Cambridge, said: "The loss of nerve cells in the retina is a feature of many blinding eye diseases. The retina is an exquisitely organised structure where the precise arrangement of cells in relation to one another is critical for effective visual function.
Human eye
The retina sits at the back of the eye
"Our study has shown, for the first time, that cells derived from the mature central nervous system, the eye, can be printed using a piezoelectric inkjet printer. Although our results are preliminary and much more work is still required, the aim is to develop this technology for use in retinal repair in the future."
They now plan to attempt to print other types of retinal cells, including the light-sensitive photoreceptors - rods and cones.
Scientists have already been able to reverse blindness in mice using stem cell transplants.
And there is promising work into electronic retina implants implants in patients.
Clara Eaglen, of the RNIB, said: "Clearly it's still at a very early stage and further research is needed to develop this technology for use in repairing the retina in humans.
"The key to this research, once the technology has moved on, will be how much useful vision is restored.
"Even a small bit of sight can make a real difference, for some people it could be the difference between leaving the house on their own or not.
"It could help boost people's confidence and in turn their independence."
Prof Jim Bainbridge of London's Moorfields Eye Hospital said: "The finding that eye cells can survive the printing process suggests the exciting possibility that this technique could be used in the future to create organised tissues for regeneration of the eye and restoration of sight.
"Blindness is commonly caused by degeneration of nerve cells in the eye. In recent years there has been substantial progress towards the development of new treatments involving cell transplantation."
The article is about studies that are being analize to trat the blindness problems. the idea of scientist is to repair the eyes by using new printed eyed cells. there aim is to develope this technology for use in retinaal repair in the future.
